In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson (Keanu Reeves) will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into—the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before. Déjà vu.
Despite me always considered myself to be a tech-smart person, I have to admit I do find the Matrix movies a little confusing. Nonetheless, here we are in 2022 watching The Matrix: Resurrections on 4K from Warner Brothers. And after the last one left things a bit oddly open, I’m reporting that things aren’t all that more clear when this one starts. We have people rewatching the events of the original Matrix but something just isn’t right. Things happen and then we rejoin our chosen one Neo as he is apparently in a whole new Matrix where he works as a game maker and the Matrix films we have seen are the games he has made. Trinity is here as well and she’s a mother with a family and despite Neo obviously having a connection to her, neither really know who the other is. Insert some new people, insert some new people in older roles and we are off and running as we try to get Neo to remember just who he is.

Basically after about an hour or so we realize that the plot of this movie is just to reunite Trinity and Neo, what happens after that happens (if it does happen) will have to be told in yet another movie, but I’m not so sure we need that or going by some of the reviews of this if anyone really wants that. Visually I’d say The Matrix: Resurrections is a steller film. Seeing it in 4K doesn’t hurt that at all either, as I’m sure you can all imagine. The actual plot and substance of this one seem to be where things are lacking. There are some nice action scenes and we have a few nice throwback moments, but you really just want this one to get to the point, and when that point is made that’s sorted it for this one. It’s not always bad to revisit hit franchises, but it certainly can be hard to live up to the hype once you do and this movie (while not awful) shows that.
