Dracula is alive. In fact, he plans to rule the world and that is why he seeks the help of other legendary monsters. However, a bunch of kids regarded by their peers as losers uncover the devious plan and prepare for a counter strike. Here take a look at a classic that has a new release from Paramount on a standard DVD, but why the heck not? The Olive DVD and Blu-ray is out of print and the Kino 4K is out there, but some people just want a more price friendly DVD and that’s what this release is!
A movie like this can easily play off nostalgia if you grew up in the 80s and experienced this classic on VHS back in the day. While I admit a great part of my enjoyment of it is due to that, I also admit that this is about as awesome as a movie with a PG-13 restriction can get. The movie never does waste time from the start to the finish and the classic monsters are just a joy to see as they are being used in this 1980s environment. And it is also a film that gives us a lot to quote after seeing it. I’m sure the one about the wolfman having nards still being quotes by horror lovers everywhere today proves my point.
Maybe we can’t call this little story about kids fighting the universal monsters a perfect film. But it does come close. Maybe we love the atmosphere? Or maybe we just love it because the horror loving kids in this movie reminds us a whole lot of ourselves. Honestly it doesn’t really matter what our reasons are we all seem to love this film and it just has a cool little story and a feel good vibe about it. You may however want to track down the now out of print version of this one because while the transfers are about the same and looks just fine, the re-release version lacks any special features. Then again, if you are taking this DVD over the 4K that is out there I will assume you probably don’t really care about extras.
