For the first time since the original Severin Release of Threads in 2018 I decided to totally put myself in a depressing mood and give the movie a watch again. The following is what my conclusion is…
There are horror movies that leave you sleeping with the lights on.
There are horror movies that make you afraid to go into the basement.
And then there’s Threads, which makes you want to crawl under a blanket, question the future of humanity, and maybe send a thank-you card to whoever invented diplomacy.
This isn’t a fun movie. This isn’t an entertaining popcorn flick. This isn’t the kind of film you throw on because you’re “in the mood for something uplifting.” Threads is the cinematic equivalent of being repeatedly hit over the head with the phrase, “Everything is going to be absolutely terrible,” and somehow it just keeps getting worse from there.
Made for British television in 1984, Threads follows ordinary people before, during, and after a nuclear attack, and it doesn’t pull a single punch. Forget Hollywood heroics. Forget brave scientists saving the day with thirty seconds left on the countdown clock. This movie takes one long look at nuclear war and says, “Nope… everybody loses.”
It’s one of the bleakest films ever made, and that’s exactly why it’s so effective.
The performances are incredibly natural, which somehow makes everything even more horrifying. Nobody feels like they’re acting. They just feel like ordinary people caught in an unimaginable nightmare, and that’s what sticks with you long after the credits roll.
The film also deserves a ton of credit for refusing to sensationalize the apocalypse. There’s no action-movie spectacle here. Just slow, relentless societal collapse that becomes more depressing with every passing scene. Every time you think, “Surely things can’t get worse,” Threads politely replies, “Hold my tea.”
Watching it in 2026 is still an unsettling experience because so much of it feels disturbingly plausible. That’s the real horror. There aren’t monsters hiding under the bed. Humanity is perfectly capable of creating its own.
Now let’s talk about this incredible release from Severin Films. Because somehow Severin has taken one of the most soul-crushing movies ever made and lovingly presented it in sparkling 4K.
Nothing says “collector’s edition” quite like existential dread in ultra-high definition.
The restoration looks fantastic—well, as fantastic as a movie depicting the collapse of civilization can look. The image is clean, detailed, and respectful of the source material, making this easily the best the film has ever looked. It still retains its gritty television roots, but the jump in quality is immediately noticeable.
Severin also goes completely overboard—in the best possible way—with the package itself. You get a three-disc set featuring the 4K UHD, a Blu-ray copy of the film, and an entire additional disc devoted to bonus features.
And they didn’t just throw on a trailer and call it a day. The release is packed with interviews, multiple commentaries, documentaries, and a wealth of material exploring both the making of the film and its enduring legacy. If you’ve ever wanted to spend several extra hours learning about one of the most emotionally devastating movies ever produced… well, Severin has your weekend covered.
It’s exactly the kind of boutique release physical media collectors love: beautiful presentation, thoughtful packaging, and enough supplements to justify every inch of shelf space.
Threads remains one of the most powerful and horrifying films ever made—not because it’s filled with monsters, but because it reminds us the real monsters are often our own decisions. It’s devastating, unforgettable, and about as cheerful as a tax audit during the apocalypse.
And thanks to Severin Films, you can now experience every last ounce of that emotional trauma in gorgeous 4K.
Some movies get prettier with age.
