There’s a certain point in a filmmaker’s career where the wheels are either gloriously coming off… or just kind of wobbling in a way that’s still weirdly charming. Lucio Fulci’s Voices from Beyond lands squarely in that second category.
Let’s be honest right up front: this is not Fulci at his peak. This isn’t The Beyond, this isn’t Zombie, and if you walked in expecting that level of nightmare fuel, you’re going to feel like you ordered a five-course meal and got a haunted snack instead. But you know what? That snack is still pretty tasty.
The plot—centered around a murdered man communicating from beyond the grave to expose his killers—is pure gothic soap opera nonsense, and the movie leans into it with a straight face that somehow makes it even more entertaining. The pacing is… let’s call it “leisurely to the point of concern,” but that just gives you more time to soak in the eerie atmosphere, awkward line deliveries, and that distinct late-period Fulci vibe where reality feels slightly off, like everyone’s been awake for 72 hours.
And yet, there’s something undeniably fun about it. The supernatural elements have a scrappy charm, the murder mystery angle keeps things moving just enough, and Fulci’s eye for the macabre still flickers through—even if it’s more candlelight than inferno at this stage.
Now let’s talk about the real glow-up here: the Severin Films 4K release. Given the film’s original materials (which were never exactly pristine), this transfer looks shockingly good. Colors are richer, detail is sharper, and the whole thing has been polished without scrubbing away its grimy, low-budget soul. It’s the kind of restoration that makes you go, “Wait… has this movie always looked this decent, or am I being gaslit by modern technology?”
Extras-wise, Severin does what Severin does—loads it up with enough bonus content to make you feel like you’re taking a mini film course on late-era Fulci.
So yeah, Voices from Beyond isn’t top-shelf Fulci. It’s not even mid-shelf Fulci. It’s that odd little bottle in the back that you forgot you had—but when you finally crack it open, you’re surprised it still goes down pretty smooth. Imperfect, a little clunky, occasionally baffling… but ultimately a fun, spooky time capsule that’s been given far more respect in 4K than anyone probably expected.
