Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate. But the family reunion goes awry when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.
I’m not sure why a movie like this was made in 2011 and held back until 2013 because this movie in a lot of ways is a true breath of fresh air. The movie is smart, witty, and packs enough blood to keep everyone happy. It also has a nice thing going for it by way of those plastic animal masks the killers in this movie are sporting. The movie packs a lot of elements that you could consider “Hipster” horror (including Ti West in a small role), but this movie is much more than that and much better than that as well. You won’t be disappointed by a film like this and you also won’t ever be bored as the movie builds up twists and turns with the tension.
While having a very fun and humorous vibe about it, the movie never does get too cute for its own good. I can easily say in the growing long list of home invasion flicks this is by far the most fun you will have watching one and it is overall one of the best of that sub-genre if not THE best. I like a story that isn’t straightforward and you will be having things go in very cool and different directions until the very end. If you have not checked out You’re Next then by all means check it out. This is one of the best films to come out in 2013 and it is just a cool horror flick from start to finish.
