Ahh! indeed!
Ahh! Zombies!! (2007)
Directed By: Matthew Kohnen
The Prologue
Ahh! Zombies!! huh?? Well, it’s at least a pretty interesting title that leaves me to believe it may be very good. It’s also a much better title than, Wasting Away, which was the original title if you didn’t know. Also, am I the only person who noticed the cover reminds me of the cover for The 40 Year Old Virgin?? Surely that was intentional right? But as the tag line for the movie says, “Zombies are people to.”, which makes me think..really? That may be a good point. But it’s not up to me to review that statement, it’s up to me to review the film.
The Movie
Well, like always, the military/government is up to making some form of super solder formula but since this is a horror movie and not a comic book, instead of Captain America, we get zombies as a result! What follows is a new twist on the old formula, a twist that works at some points but doesn’t at others. You see, our four friends (and one army dude) that we follow as they get infected don’t know they are infected, as a matter of fact, they think they are normal and everyone else is the infected. Did I also tell you this is a comedy yet?
Well I’ll give props where props are due and the major props I give the movie is for the look of it. It at least looks really good even if the overall result isn’t as good as the look. The film kicks off in old school black and white with the serum that causes the outbreak is always green. This happens until our main four characters are all infected in a very silly way, then the rest of the movie shoots from color when in their point of view (With them not knowing they are in fact zombies) to black and white when in everyone else’s point of view (who can see them as the zombies they are unless they are drunk)…Yeah, that drunk part opens up for a few more plot holes.
The trouble with the film for me (besides the plot holes) is the fact that the movie is a comedy, and as is the trouble with a lot of horror comedies, the jokes don’t always work and at times fall really flat. I also think the characters, for the most part, aren’t really likable, are way too goofy, and are played by actors that I feel are phoning this one in at times. Off the top of my head I recall the best character, Mike, still being pretty much a clone of sorts of Stifler from American Pie, if you can imagine that. Still all is not lost as it’s at least watchable due to the great look and unique way the story is told.
So it looks good, it has some blood, and it is a story I have never seen before outside comic books when it comes to zombies. However, on the other end of that, the characters are pretty bad, the comedy doesn’t work about 90% of the time, and it’s just a little too funny for it’s own good at times. When you add that all up you get a film that I wouldn’t put at the top of any list, but I wouldn’t say it’s not worth seeing at all. Still, you may want to save it for a time when you’re just really bored.
The Conclusion
So it didn’t live up to the hype of the title, but it’s not a total waste. While the acting won’t make you hand over any Oscars, you may be happy to know our main two women are at least hot!! That counts for something right?? Ah well, give it a rent sometime if you’re bored and have nothing better to do. But in the mean time you can get this at the fine DVD sellers MVD and check out this cool picture from the movies opening, I really think they’d be best to get this on a t-shirt.
